Viewmaster Documentaries |
Viewmaster Documentaries is a series of 3-D stereoscopic slide shows, photographed and hand-processsed by Greta Snider and Johunna Grayson. In "Underground Tourism," we invited people in San Francisco to show us their favorite places in our unique city, replacing the hackneyed Fisherman's Wharf and cable car of the unbearably superficial View Master tourist reels. Instead we see magical landfills, old man bars, thriving agriculture, and a brief history of Mission Street. In "Home," a series of home movie reels from the 40's, 50's and 60's becomes the picture track to bittersweet musings on the lost family album. In "Dimensional Bodies," a collection of intimate 3D portraits features luscious hand-processed, hand-colored, erotically charged projections that literally pop from the screen, accompanied by the words of the citizens, artists, journalists, moms, and swashbucklers portrayed. Dimensional Bodies was recently supported by a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission.

Reviews and Comments "Not to be missed!" - Johnny Ray Houston, SF Bay Guardian "By turning the reels into an interactive art experience, Snider and Grayson are transforming a mass-produced commercial product into a hand made object, and capturing the personal histories of regular people, not often reflected or celebrated in popular culture. Not only are the reels portraits of individuals, but they also reveal the hidden treasures and underground spaces scattered throughout San Francisco. Look for Ivy McClelland's tour of a clandestine cement garden near Candlestick Park; Bill Basquin working the dirt on a plot inb his community garden; and Craig Baldwin emerging from the basement of Artists Television Access. With this latest project, Snider once again takes a potentially commercial medium and creates an intimate homemade record of peoples' personal lives." -Natalija Vekic, KQED online |
